Experience at USJ in a Wheelchair

Universal Studios Japan is a popular spot with a variety of attractions.

Additionally, it features accessibility accommodations, making it enjoyable for wheelchair users.

So, what impressions do wheelchair users have when visiting USJ?

This article introduces the experience of Hirooka, a wheelchair user with spinal muscular atrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disease, who visited USJ.

Hirooka requires assistance for almost all daily activities and lives with 24-hour support from helpers.

Since starting to live alone, he has been going out about once a week.

Recently, he has visited various places like concerts, baseball games, and theme parks, including a trip to USJ with his helper.

Please refer to Hirooka's candid experience to see if USJ is accessible for wheelchair users.

1. Experiences of Visiting Universal Studios Japan | USJ in a Wheelchair

1-1. Getting Around the Park

This time, I visited USJ by car.

When I informed them at the entrance that I was in a wheelchair, I was guided to a designated parking space for disabled visitors.

The accessible parking spaces are well-equipped and located closest to the park, which was very much appreciated.

The park is generally flat, with many attractions having no steps, making it easy to navigate.

While some paths are bumpy or sloped, most are flat and easy to move through.

1-2. Attractions

To find out which attractions are accessible for wheelchair users, I checked the activities listed on USJ's official website beforehand.

However, since some information on the official website is a bit outdated, it's more reliable to ask for detailed information at the guest services in the park on the day of your visit.

For those who find it difficult to wait in line and have a disability certificate, a Guest Support Pass is issued.

Using the Guest Support Pass allows waiting in a different location instead of standing in line.

The WaterWorld attraction is accessible by wheelchair, but it's located at the edge of the park.

Therefore, if your schedule is tight, allow extra time for moving around.

1-3. Restaurants and Shops

Restaurants and shops within USJ are generally accessible by wheelchair.

Moreover, they are spacious enough to navigate comfortably when not crowded.

However, SAIDO, the only Japanese restaurant in USJ, has stairs, so it's necessary to confirm accessibility beforehand.

1-4. Restrooms

USJ has numerous wheelchair-accessible restrooms that are barrier-free.

They are located not only in each area but also in table service restaurants and Stage 33™.

USJ's website lists the locations of ostomate facilities and nursing beds, so be sure to check in advance.

The restroom near WaterWorld is equipped with a nursing bed, and although it's a bit narrow, it was usable without issues.

1-5. First Aid Facilities

In case of trouble at USJ, the availability of first aid facilities can provide peace of mind.

Upon inquiring at guest services, I was informed that the first aid facility is located in a building directly opposite the guest services.

Specifically, first aid facilities are located in the following areas:

  • Hollywood Area (First Aid)
  • San Francisco Area (South First Aid)

They can be used if you suddenly feel unwell or get injured.

However, note that these are not medical facilities, so they do not provide treatment or medication.

1-6. Support and Reasonable Accommodations

The staff at USJ were very courteous and clear in their assistance.

In particular, they kindly explained how to use the Guest Support Pass and how to smoothly enjoy the attractions.

However, in case of an emergency during an activity, it might be difficult for staff to assist immediately, so it's advisable to prepare to move independently.

2. Tips for Enjoying Universal Studios Japan | USJ in a Wheelchair

2-1. Heatstroke Prevention for Those with Difficulty Regulating Body Temperature

In recent years, summers have become increasingly hot, making heatstroke prevention essential when enjoying outdoor activities.

For individuals with spinal cord injuries or cervical cord injuries who have difficulty regulating body temperature, it's especially important to take thorough heatstroke prevention measures.

Wearing clothes soaked with sweat can reduce breathability and make it difficult to lower body temperature.

Therefore, it's recommended to wear underwear or clothing made of moisture-wicking and quick-drying materials.

Additionally, caregivers should monitor the individual's condition and encourage early hydration.

2-2. Cold Feet Prevention in Winter

When visiting USJ attractions in winter, cold weather protection is necessary.

Even if your body is warm with winter clothing, it can be challenging to keep your feet warm.

A simple way to prevent cold feet is to wear thick socks.

Additionally, wearing UNIQLO's Heattech Ultra Warm can help keep the cold at bay.

Furthermore, taking herbal remedies like Boiogito to warm from the inside is also recommended.

3. Can Children with Medical Needs or Disabilities Enjoy Universal Studios Japan | USJ?

Children with medical needs or disabilities can also enjoy various attractions at USJ.

Ayumi Takahashi, the representative director of the NPO Aeria, which envisions "a future where people support each other," and a qualified nurse, shared her impressions of visiting Universal Studios Japan with children with medical needs.

According to her experience, even if a child has difficulty maintaining a seated position due to lack of neck support, they could enjoy "Yoshi's Adventure™" if a caregiver could constantly support their neck.

4. Conclusion

Additionally, the park is equipped with barrier-free facilities, showing considerable consideration for wheelchair users.

In practice, the kindness and assistance from the crew, especially towards wheelchair users, were commendable.
