How would you live if you had only one arm?

This time, we interviewed Kataude no Jinsei-san, who expresses herself primarily on social media.

We discussed why she chose to express her once-perceived complex disability, her thoughts on individuality, and her roots.

We hope those who are struggling with how to face their own disabilities will read to the end.

1. Who is Kataude no Jinsei-san?

Kataude no Jinsei-san, who is active mainly on Instagram, works as a childcare worker supporting children with disabilities.

She was born with a disability called limb deficiency, missing her left arm below the elbow. It was not known until her birth, and her parents were not allowed to see her immediately after birth to protect their mental and physical well-being.

As a child, she was very cheerful and was known as a tomboy, playing volleyball in elementary school. However, at some point, she started to think, "I am disabled," and began to be conscious of being different from others.

In middle school, she had to tie her hair due to school rules. Unable to do it herself and not wanting to burden her family every day, she reluctantly cut her hair.

She wondered why she was the only one who couldn't do it and why she had to cut her hair, encountering the wall of disability for the first time.

As she grew older, she became more aware of others' gazes.

Additionally, because her summer uniform exposed her left arm, she began to hide it with her right hand, leading to a significant stoop and eventually stopped wearing short sleeves.

However, as someone who loves fashion, Kataude no Jinsei-san decided to embrace her disability as a strength. She now shares her true self on social media, inspiring many people.

2. Why She Continues to Share on Social Media

Since starting Instagram in 2021, she primarily shares fashion content.

While she once wished to be non-disabled, she realized it was difficult and decided to live without worrying about her disability. Encouraged by friends, she started her Instagram account.

She was surprised by the many comments and direct messages she received, realizing she was making a difference in others' lives.

Many of her posts feature short-sleeve fashion.

That represents her ideal self. While it takes courage to wear short sleeves in public, Instagram allows her to wear her favorite fashion easily, continuing to express herself on social media.

3. Finding a Turning Point in Life as a Childcare Worker

Alongside her social media activities, Kataude no Jinsei-san works in a daycare supporting children with disabilities as a childcare worker.

She is involved in a wide range of tasks, including picking up children from school, supporting their studies, and planning events, finding her work very enjoyable.

However, she experienced many setbacks before finding this job.

Originally, she wanted to enter the culinary industry, but due to a lack of understanding about her disability, she ended up attending a technical high school.

While her friends pursued their dreams, she felt strong doubts about making decisions based on her disability.

After graduation, she was hired by the city hall and assigned to a customer service desk. She often felt uncomfortable being stared at by customers, which eventually led to her being diagnosed with adjustment disorder.

After quitting, she applied for other jobs but was repeatedly rejected due to her limb deficiency, leading to feelings of frustration. Despite this, she couldn't stop thinking about a childcare worker position she had once been rejected for.

Meeting her current workplace marked a turning point in her life.

Because she also has a disability, she feels a sense of security in not having to worry about how to interact with children or others' perceptions. She finds the most fulfillment in witnessing children's growth, which also encourages her.

Despite difficult experiences, she continued to face them and eventually found a workplace she enjoys.

4. Living Boldly Without Hiding Her Disability

Kataude no Jinsei-san says she has often been overwhelmed by her disability.

Once, a partner told her, "You wear heavy makeup for a disabled person," which she couldn't comprehend as it reflected a biased view of disability. At that moment, she decided, "Regardless of my disability, I am who I am, and I will make all my own decisions."

This decision has influenced her current activities.

According to Kataude no Jinsei-san, "Individuality is being true to oneself," and it's about choosing the fashion you want to wear and the path you want to take without worrying about others' opinions.

She hopes to continue expressing her individuality through Instagram and other platforms, conveying that no one is alone.

Finally, we asked about her goals.

Her answer was, of course, "I want to walk outside in short sleeves."
