2. Discover the Charm of Gyoen Roan!

Gyoen Roan, with its eye-catching gentle slope and accessible entrance, is located along the road in Shinjuku, surrounded by towering buildings.

This Japanese restaurant is renowned for its "Robatayaki," where seasonal fish is expertly grilled to perfection over a large "irori" using Binchotan charcoal.

The counter seats surrounding the irori are designed at a height accessible for wheelchair users, allowing guests to enjoy the atmosphere as seafood is grilled.

There are also table seats at the back of the restaurant, and the pathway to the sunken kotatsu-style seating is wheelchair accessible.

One of the highlights is that, in addition to separate restrooms for men and women, there is a wheelchair-accessible restroom installed within the restaurant!

This means you can enjoy drinks and parties without worrying about restroom accessibility.

Moreover, since the "Robatayaki" method involves grilling beside the Binchotan charcoal, there is no smoke or lingering odor.
You can enjoy your time without worrying about odors clinging to your clothes or wheelchair, which is another attractive feature.

3. The Vision of the Store and Manager

Gyoen Roan began with the desire to create a place where wheelchair users can also enjoy dining.

A friend of the manager, who is a wheelchair user, was involved from the design stage, checking aspects like table height and wheelchair pathways to ensure a pleasant experience for wheelchair users.

Initially, professionals in the design field strongly opposed such a design.

However, the manager shared the reason for pursuing an accessible establishment.

"The idea to open Gyoen Roan came from hearing that 'a friend who became wheelchair-bound couldn't visit restaurants.'

I thought there were few places accessible to people with disabilities, especially street-level establishments in Tokyo. We decided to do something beneficial for those affected by designing the restaurant to be accessible.

A good restaurant for people with disabilities is also a comfortable place for those without disabilities.

Among our repeat customers is a university professor who uses an electric wheelchair."
